Curly & Coily Hair Specialists
Curly and coily hair needs a barber who understands texture. Our Dominican barbers specialize in cutting curly hair - fades that blend, lineups that hold, cuts that work with your natural pattern.
Curly and coily hair is different. It shrinks when it dries, it grows in unpredictable patterns, and a fade that looks great on straight hair can look patchy and uneven on curly hair. That's why you need a barber who actually understands curly hair texture - and that's exactly what The Dominicans Barbershop specializes in.
Our founder, Joseph Mejia, brought the Dominican barbering tradition to Raleigh in 2006. Dominican barbers are famous for their expertise with curly and coily hair - it's a core part of the training. Our 24 barbers are all trained in cutting every curl pattern, from loose waves to tight coils.
Whether you have Type 2 wavy hair, Type 3 curly hair, or Type 4 coily hair, we know how to cut it, fade it, and shape it so it looks intentional and sharp. Cuts from $35, fades from $40. Open 7 days a week. Walk-ins welcome.
Curly hair is structurally different from straight hair. The curl pattern means the hair grows in a spiral, which affects how it lays, how it fades, and how a lineup holds. A barber who only cuts straight hair will often make mistakes on curly hair: fades that look uneven, lineups that don't hold, cuts that don't account for shrinkage.
Dominican barbers have been cutting curly and coily hair for generations. It's a core part of the Dominican barbering tradition. We understand how to: blend fades on curly hair so the transition is smooth (not patchy), shape lineups so they hold for weeks (curly hair holds a line differently), cut with the curl pattern (not against it), and account for shrinkage (curly hair appears shorter when dry).
When you sit in our chair, you're not guessing whether the barber can handle your hair type. Our 24 barbers are all trained in every curl pattern. You'll leave with a cut that works with your natural texture - not against it.
The most requested curly hair cuts at our shop include: Curly Fade ($40+) - skin or taper fade with curly length on top, the most popular style. Curly Taper - gradual taper keeping more length, natural look. Curly Buzz Cut - short and uniform, low-maintenance. Curly Comb Over - longer curls styled to one side with faded sides. Curly Afro with Fade - rounded shape with faded sides, classic and bold. Curly Twists / Coils with Fade - for Type 4 hair, twists or coils on top with clean faded sides.
We also do shape-ups and lineups on curly hair, which require a specific technique. Curly hair holds a line differently than straight hair - the barber has to account for the curl pattern when shaping the hairline. Our barbers know how to create a crisp, sharp lineup that lasts.
Not sure what style works for your curl pattern? Bring a photo or describe what you want. Your barber will assess your curl type, hair density, and head shape to recommend the best style.
Curly hair needs moisture. Between cuts, use a good conditioner or leave-in conditioner to keep your curls hydrated. Avoid harsh shampoos that strip natural oils. Consider a curl cream or gel to define your curl pattern.
For the fade, avoid touching the sides with clippers at home. If the lineup starts to fade, come in for a quick shape-up ($15) - it keeps you looking sharp between full cuts. We recommend coming every 2-3 weeks for a touch-up.
For the top, let your curls do their thing. If you want to style them, use a curl cream or gel on damp hair and let it air dry or use a diffuser. Don't brush curly hair when it's dry - it causes frizz. Ask your barber for product recommendations tailored to your curl type.
